"I used to believe there was no way I could ever help someone," I'd mutter to myself every time someone suggested I'd make a great life and transformation coach. "Seriously, who would listen to a 5-foot-5 Colombian immigrant?"

 

Back then, I was a Door-to-Door salesman, coaching and mentoring others in the art of pitching and deal-making. Some of these men and women could have easily been my parents, and I often wondered, "How in the world am I doing this?" But, despite my doubts, I was opening new markets, raking in money, and helping others do the same. It felt like I was onto something big.

 

Everything seemed perfect... until I realized what a fraud I had become.

 

From the outside, my life looked amazing. Living at the Jersey Shore, just a stone's throw from the beach, in a beautiful house surrounded by friends. I was making money doing what I loved—or so I thought. I had a beautiful girlfriend, and we appeared to have an awesome relationship. That was the facade, at least. Behind closed doors, I was completely disconnected from myself, my purpose, and the woman I shared my bed with. I wasn't in a relationship; I was too immature to express my feelings, so I let the days drift by, hoping for a change.

 

Anxiety consumed my working days as I knew deep down I wasn't living up to my potential. I had more money than I ever thought possible, yet I felt utterly empty. And so, the perfect storm brewed. Weekends became a blur of alcohol, an attempt to numb the turmoil within. This was my daily grind.

 

Change was needed, but I avoided it. I continued on until I discovered my girlfriend had cheated on me with one of our roommates, and suddenly, the ground gave way beneath my feet. Overnight, the friends I had lived with for over two years became untrustworthy. My career made me sick, and my relationship unraveled. At least, in the way we knew it.

 

Fast forward to today, and that same girlfriend is now my wife. We've been together for over a decade, and as I write this, we've just celebrated our three-year wedding anniversary. Together, we've helped countless couples overcome relationship breakdowns and challenges, firmly rooted in our faith. Our house is built on a foundation that can withstand any storm.

 

Now, I do what I love and love what I do every single day. I've realized that the very reason I thought I wasn't qualified to help others is the very reason I was created for this purpose. My weaknesses are where I find my strengths, amplified in Christ. Through Him, all things are possible. It was never about me; it's much bigger than that.

 

I've now helped hundreds of people from all walks of life, from sales to executive leadership to dads transitioning careers. The journey of transformation and growth demands discipline, commitment, and grit—qualities most of us haven't been introduced to, at least I hadn't.

Of course, this didn't happen overnight, nor was it easy. Everything takes time to grow; those overnight successes we hear of don't happen overnight. Don't buy into the lie. Ease or difficulty is a choice we make. What's easy for you might be hard for someone else, and vice versa. The key is taking full ownership and responsibility for what we experience. You may not have the skill yet, but you commit to figuring it out.

 

The moment I let go of my excuses and reasons for not doing something, my life transformed into new realms of possibility. When I released control and put my trust in the process, unshakeable peace washed over me.

 

You are responsible for your responses, your actions, and for letting go and trusting, even in the midst of a storm. This journey continues to teach me that I don't have all the answers for you, just as no one has all the answers for me.

 

But together, the journey becomes smoother when you have someone by your side, committed to supporting you along the way. Sometimes, that support comes in the form of a challenge; after all, they say iron sharpens iron for a reason. As a leader, your role is to lead yourself and, in the process, give others the opportunity to learn from your leadership.
